****Televised DSC Performance at PECO Towers!****

On Friday, May 9, we will we performing a short set of Brazilian music together at the Peco Towers, 23rd and Market in Philadelphia.  We play at 11:30am.  We'll be on TV, hooray!

EWE RESIDENCY AT THE PHILADELPHIA SCHOOL

Check out this clip of Brad's Ewe drumming residency at The Philadelphia School. All month he will be working with an ensemble of middle school students teaching them about this amazing Ghanaian tradition and preparing them for a performance at the end of the month. As you can see from this clip, this music is infectious!

DSC COLLABORATES WITH DOLCE SUONO ENSEMBLE

On May 2, Gabriel and the Dolce Suono Ensemble visited Casa Monarco, a Latino community center in South Philly.    There, they performed some Brazilian and American music and then hosted an instrument petting zoo.  Special thanks to Mimi Stillman and DSE for making this happen! DSC Visits Paterson Music Project 4-14-14

On Monday, 4/14/14, we headed to Paterson, in North Jersey to work with students in the Patterson Music Project, an El-Sistema inspired site.  Thanks to our good friend, Liz Moulthrop (one of our funders :))) We were able to share some Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Cuban rhythms with students aged 8-10.  Here are some pics from the day (more coming soon).

DSC Visits Queensborough Community College 4-8-14

 Gabriel returned to percussionist Jon Singer's World's of Music at Queensborough Community College to present music from Salvador da Bahia.  Check out the following clip, in which students perform DSC's arrangement of a dance called Avamuna, from the traditions of Candomble.  The students lead the song, play the drum parts, and perform the dance, all after learning it for only 15 minutes.  We all had a great time, and everyone (including Gabriel) walked away having learned so much. Thank you Jon for hosting!

Pics from DSC visit to Orchestra of Saint Luke's Youth Orchestra Bucket Band 3-14-14

On March 14, Gabriel visited The Orchestra of St. Luke's Youth Orchestra in NYC to lead a bucket band workshop.  Together we explored using language to create compositional ideas and practiced call and response.  Thank you to Jennifer Kessler and the YOSL team for hosting!

Pictures from DSC Workshops in Philly, Los Angeles

On February 10th we visited the Teen Lounge at Fleischer Art Memorial in South Philly.  Teen Lounge is a free daily program in which kids can drop in and explore the arts.  We worked with the students (most of whom were not musicians) on a rhythm from Salvador called Samba-Reggae.  By the end of class we were totally grooving!  Thank you to Linda Fernandez and Maryan Captain for helping make this happen.

The adventures continued as we traveled to Los Angeles to attend and present at the LA Phil's Take A Stand Sympsosium, a convention celebrating El Sistema and congregating most of the El Sistema-inspired program directors in America and the world.  During the last day of the symposium we gave two classes about our project.  One was for 20 students in the YOLA program, the flagship El-Sistema inspired orchestra of the LA Philharmonic. The second class was for adult symposium attendees.  Both classes were about music and percussion from Salvador but each was presented in a very different way.   It was a pleasure getting to share our ideas with so many inspired and dedicated people.  Thank you, LA Phil for setting an amazing standard of what it means to be part of a community far beyond your subscribers!
